  • In most cases, the symbiotic relationship between host plants & mycorrhizal fungus is symbiotic & mutualistic (or mutually beneficial). The fungi come into direct contact with plant roots & with soil, adding to the plants ability to gather nutrients & water from soil through the fungi.

Fungi colonize the root system of a host plant, providing increased water & nutrient absorption capabilities while the plant provides the fungi with carbohydrates formed from photosynthesis. Fungi colonize roots forming a biological link between the root & soil. Fungi grows into the root & out into the soil. The plant responds by altering its physiology in several ways. Fungi in the soil absorbs water & nutrients from the soil & conducts them back to the root.
